How far have Waikowhai Students travelled?

Cybersmart with James this week required us to think deeply about how the population of our country and our school is made up. We are so lucky here at Waikowhai Primary to have such diverse students and teachers. We think that this makes our school so special.





To go with our Maps James also asked us some questions to make us think even deeper about our learning. Does your way of thinking match with ours?
How far have some students travelled in their lifetime to reach WPS?
Faihdi for example has traveled over 9000km to come to the wonderful Room 7. However most of the students in our class was born here in Auckland. What if we asked the same question about our parents would we get the same answers?

Why do people make the choice to move to different countries?

There are many many reasons for people to move to different countries. War, Quality of life, Family, Money, Work, plus so many more.

Is this a trend in NZ society? What does the media tell us?

If we listened to Media reports NZ is being taken over by immigrants. However is this true if you didn't live in Auckland???? Is Immigration a bad thing if there was no immigration would Room 7 be as mixed and amazing as it is?

We would also like to share with you a video that we believe ties in well with the topic we have been learning about. Its a very emotional video that really makes up think. We hope that you watch it and share your thoughts with us.

Where Room 7 were born


Today James taught us how to use google maps to map out different types of information. Today we were mapping out where in the world each member of our class was born. Firstly had to collect our data, we did this by inputting all of our information onto a shared doc. As it turned out a lot of the members from Room 7 were born in Auckland Hospital but we do have some members that were born all over the world which is so cool. R E S P E C T

In Room 7 and throughout Waikowhai Primary RESPECT for ourselves and others is such an important learning. We have been learning about what it takes to have respect for not only ourselves but others as well. We brainstormed and noted words and phrases of ways that we can show respect in our everyday lives.  What we need to do next was find a interesting medium that could get our message across and make everyone sit up and listen. So we made a RAP!  We even mixed our own music how good are we!!

The Famous Waikowhai Art Show


It is that time of the year again when us kids at Waikowhai Primary get out creative juices flowing to produce fabulous pieces of art to go on display for our parents and community to come and view. This year Room 7 decided that we would really push ourselves and create some 3D clay sculptures. We also as a class had to come up with a theme to go with out Art so we decided to go with MYTHICAL CREATURES.  Because we knew working with clay was never going to be easy we had to stay really focused and have a good plan of what we had to do so we would get a really good end result. Firstly we had to sketch out and draw what we wanted our creature to look like. Then we used play dough to mould our 3D shape so if we made a mistake we could fix. Next step for sure was the most fun. We got to play with and mould the sticky, slimy clay into what we wanted our Mythical Creatures to look like. We also got to get our hands and some of us not naming names ;-) got our cloths really dirty which was so fun. Firing the clay in the kiln was the next step that had to be done because this was to make the clay rock hard and able to be painted. Unfortunately some of our creatures arms or legs did not survive this part of the process but because we are super talented we made it work.  Then all we had to do was paint our creatures with the colours that we wanted to make them stand out in the crowd.

Room 7 being as hard working as we are were not satisfied with just creating 3D clay work so we pushed ourselves even more and created a story about our Mythical Creature on google slides. We did this so our parents knew some background about were and why our creatures came about. But how were we going to be able to show our google slides without printing them off? It was alright as we had this covered as well. We created QR codes that could sit along side our work. Pretty talented we reckon.

Our Outstanding Book Trailers

This term the very talented Room 7 decided that we would like to encourage more reading within our school. So as a class we thought long and hard and brain stormed ideas of ways that we could get the whole school reading. What we came up with was that we have such amazing books in our schools library that we need to advertise these more and what better way to do this than to make book trailers.

So Mr Ross set everyone in the class a task of over a week long period to complete one reading book from our library that we would enjoy reading and could advertise to the school. Our next step was to compile a load of photos that we found on the internet that match the story we painted in our heads from the book and that could also tell our story without giving to much away.  After this the real fun began we got to go onto Imovie and select a trailer theme that matched our story. There we so many themes to pick from there was adventure, scary, teen, adrenaline plus so many more. Then the most complicated part of the book trailer was left till last. We had to sequence all our pictures we gathered together and add really good descriptive language to give our audience a little taste of what our books are about without giving any of the important parts of the story away.  Below are just a couple of examples of some of the book trailers we made. Inquiry Inquiry Inquiry

Room 7 have welcomed in the new term with a bang. We thought we would get really hands on with our learning this week to build on from the work that did last term around electricity. Alongside Rooms 8 and 9 we tackled creating our own electrical circuits using the "Brain Box" kits. Our goal was to work as a cohesive group of three, concentrate, have fun and follow the instructions of the booklet to create some fantastic creations.  Not only did we achieve this but we even managed to create some of our own circuits. 6 Word Challenge

The mighty Room 7 have been at it again! This time we have created an fantastic video that we would like to share with you all.  Our challenge was to tell a story in 6 words or less.  In the beginning of the writing process we found it difficult to try and express ourselves using just the 6 words. However, over the week we worked super hard and started to experiment using more descriptive language in our stories. By doing this we unleashed our inner writer and came up with what we think is a awesome Video.  Have a watch and tell us what you think.

Muriwai School Camp

WOW, what a week that was! Rooms Seven, Eight and Nine went on a fabulous, back to basics, old school camp out at Muriwai beach last week.  The aim of our camp was to be pushed outside our comfort zones and challenge ourselves away from the classroom setting. BOY OH BOY, did we do this. We pushed ourselves in ways that we had never done before with the most exciting thing being, no matter how hard it got we never gave up and we achieved things that we never thought we could. We got pelted by rain, covered in mud, blown off track, had wobbly legs, walked in the dark and you know what the best part of it all was. WE LOVED EVERY MINUTE.

"Week 2" Our Fabulously Fun Wheels day

On Friday the whole school took part in the fantastic WACKY WHEELS DAY  as part of our fundraising efforts for the rapidly approaching camp. This was a day of fun and laughter with the students learning loads of new skill they never know they had. As you can see by the photos the students in Room 7 had an absolute ball.  But a massive thank you has to go out to our wonderfully talented Room 9 teacher Ms Sands and her leadership team for all the hard work that they put in to make the day run ever so smoothly.

Room 7's Descriptive Writing

So far this term the might Room 7 have been doing some outstanding work around descriptive writing. What we have been learning about and our  primary focus during our descriptive writing is to describe a person, place or thing in such a way that a fantastic and moving picture is formed in the reader's mind.

The Wild horse By Kiana

Wild horse running through blazing winds, hurricanes and crackling thunder. She was running  fast with terrifying thoughts running through her head.

Wild horse black hair is just like a beautiful river going past the mountains. Her tail is like seaweed flowing in the ocean.

Jumping higher than kangaroo on a burning hot day . As the night goes cold she runs fast as she can to get back home. 



The Wild Stallion By Caitlin

The wild horse galloping in the long grass, its freedom out in the open with strong winds and hurricanes...

Flowing dark mane flies through the air. It's dark chocolate coat shines in the sun like a house burning in a blaze. As its mighty hooves touch the ground it startled its self and runs to finds a cool river to rest by.

Trotting into the mist while the leaves blow around in the breeze. Running around  it finds a little spider and jumps as the spider lands softly on its wet nose…




The P├ętanque Trip By Hame

Being squashed in a van was like a wallaby getting smashed by the beast called Jonah Lomu.  The van speeding through the cars it felt like a Bugatti drifting.  
Skidding to a stop with grey, blue smoke all over the place.


Heavy rain falling down on the stoney rocks. The smashing cracking noise as the silver ball hits the ground. Nervously i float a ball up the thick black sky.  





Our class Assembly

Big empty space, getting filled class by class. Kids whispering to each other just  like the Warriors fans after a big loss. All of the kids staring at me just like in WWE when the Big Show vs The Beast.

My hands were sweating just like rain falling from the big thundering sky. Lucky that my mum and dad did not come because i would be more terrified.
